Is my tap possessed?
Occasionally, for no obvious reason, a stream of water will come out of a tap. Why is this?
The cause of this phenomenon is a small device called an aerator which is fitted to the outlet of most modern taps to reduce water use. An aerator looks like a perforated or slotted disc and it works by breaking up the flow of water into several thin threads. The user still perceives the tap as giving a good strong flow, even though the volume of water is much reduced. An additional benefit of an aerator is that it focuses the flow and reduces splashing. However, when the tap is turned off, surface tension within the individual pores of the aerator prevents the tap draining completely and some water stays in the pipe between the valve and the outlet. How much water depends on the design of the tap. Large loopy taps of the type fitted to kitchen sinks retain the most. Several things can then cause the surface tension to fail and the tap to drain suddenly. A change in air pressure or a change in temperature can cause this. This is why the phenomenon is seen more often in hot taps – they cool down naturally after being turned off. The surface tension can also be broken physically, for example by touching the underside of the aerator.
